Settlement

In 1736 settlers hailing from Scotlands Highland region arrived in Fayetteville via the Cape Fear River. The area quickly emerged as a hub for governance and business due to its location as a port and a key point in the early Plank Roads system. For than 12,000 years this land was originally occupied by communities such as Eno, Shakori and Cape Fear.

During the 1760s Cross Creek gained fame for its flourishing real estate market. Eventually evolved into a commercial center by 1762.

Origin of Name

The city was named after Marquis de Lafayette in honor of his service as a Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

American Revolution

During the 1700s Fayetteville experienced influence from immigrants. A large majority of these immigrants remained loyal, to the government during that time.
During that period the people of Fayetteville were actively opposing the Royal Governor. However they ultimately faced defeat at the hands of the Revolutionary force in a battle known as Moores Creek Bridge. Towards the end of 1775 the residents finalized what later became known as the “Liberty Point Resolves,” a document that played a role, in shaping the Declaration of Independence.

Fayetteville experienced its era in the 1780s when it became a political hub for the state. In 1786 they opened their courthouse and jail facilities. Additionally Fayetteville saw its inaugural newspaper, The Fayetteville Gazette launched in 1789.

The Crucial 19th Century

The 19th century proved to be crucial for Fayettevilles development regarding its growth. This city served as a hub for goods, services and ideas. It thrived with establishments such as courthouse churches, lawyers offices, banks, dancing clubs, taverns. All contributing to its atmosphere. Prior to the civil war era, trade and commerce flourished in Fayetteville with an abundance of stores, flour mills,lumber production and wheat transportation to Wilmington.

Civil War

The Civil War had an impact on Fayetteville when General William T. Sherman led his army of around 60k soldiers in an attack on this city in 1865. This assault resulted in damage to Confederate facilities and led to destruction of foundries and cotton factories, by Shermans troops.
During the war the Confederate army had a gun factory constructed by the government. However towards the end of the war Shermans troops destroyed both the armory and the offices of the Fayetteville Observer.

World Wars

Moving on to World War I in 1918 as the war was drawing to a close the U.S. Army acquired an amount of land, near woods and farmland measuring over 10,000 acres. They established an installation called Camp Bragg, which later came to be known as Fort Bragg. This site served as home to artillery units and Air Corps planes.

Fort Bragg played a role during World War II as hundreds of thousands of soldiers passed through it on their way to battlefronts across the globe. It became one of the training sites for Army personnel at that time. To summarize Fayetteville experienced growth during wartime and its population continued to increase. In the 1960s there was an influx of immigrants that led to industries in plastics manufacturing, tire production, auto parts development and appliance manufacturing. The economy. Stabilized during this period resulting in advancements such as improved schools, healthcare facilities, modern roads construction among others. Additionally it was also, during this time that Fayetteville Technical Community College first opened its doors.

Nowadays

Currently the citys growth is evident, in its downtown area, where an increasing number of residents and visitors can be observed. Fayetteville boasts sought after suburbs, including Hope Mills, Raeford and Spring Lake.
