This article covers the history behind the great Fayetteville.

Settlement

In 1736 the original settler from Highland of Scotland arrived at Fayetteville through the Cape Fear River. The area is developing as it is central to governing and business since the site is an inland port and hub of the early Plank Roads system. Initially, the people of Eno, Shakori, and Cape Fear occupied this area for more than 12,000 years.

In the 1760s, the Cross Creek area’s settlement became famous for its real estate market. In 1762 Cross Creek became the commercial center.

Origin of Name

In honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman who served as a Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, the city was named after him.

American Revolution

Fayetteville was heavily influenced by the Scottish around the 1700s. The significant majority of immigrants from Scotland remained loyal to the British government. At that time, they were rallying against the Royal Governor. Eventually, they got defeated by the Revolutionary force at the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge. In late 1775, residents finalized the “Liberty Point Resolves,” which later became the Declaration of Independence.

The golden decade of Fayetteville is during the 1780s. This city has become the state’s political center in many ways, and a courthouse and jail were first opened in 1786. The city launched its first newspaper, The Fayetteville Gazette, in 1789.

The Crucial 19th Century

During this period, Fayetteville developed its economic aspect, which this city functions as a regional entrepot for goods, services, and ideas. The area is filled with upbringing features and businesses, including courthouse churches, lawyers’ offices, banks, dancing clubs, taverns, and many more. Before the civil war, the trade and commerce in Fayetteville were significantly improved and filled with naval stores, flour, lumber, and wheat, passing through on their way to Wilmington.

Civil War

In 1865, there was an attack in Fayetteville constructed by Gen. William T. Sherman and his 60,000-man army. This attack destroyed the Confederate arsenal. Not only that, Sherman’s troops destroyed foundries and cotton factories. The federal government built a gun factory for the Confederate army during this civil war. But in the last days of the civil war, Sherman’s troops knocked down the armory and destroyed the offices of the Fayetteville Observer.

World Wars

In the last month of World War I in 1918, the U.S. Army acquired ample land near pine woods and farmland, which was more than 10,000 acres. Then they built an installation called Camp Bragg, which was renamed to Fort Bragg. It is home to artillery units and Air Corps planes.

On their way to world battlefronts during World War II, hundreds of thousands of soldiers passed through Fort Bragg. Fort Bragg becomes the most critical Army training site during this time. Long story short, the wartime made Fayetteville a bigger city than before, and its population continued to grow. In the 1960s, more immigrants started to come, which created new industries making plastics, tires, auto parts, and appliances. During this time, the economy is growing and stabilizing. It pushes the growth of public schools, health care facilities, modern roads, and many more. The Fayetteville Technical Community College opened during this period.
