Although many homeowners call in a professional roofing company when needed, some don’t pay as much close attention to their house roof as their counterparts. For this other half, we sincerely hope that we will change your mind in this blog. And for those who just want to know more about roof installations and how to install a roof, grab your coffee, and let’s get started!
Before you do any type of roof installation by yourself, you have to make sure you’re up for the challenge. You can test your mettle by taking a ladder and climbing up on the roof. When up there, try and be as meticulous as possible, and inspect the surface to the smallest detail. If you find you can’t stand comfortably on it or have a feeling it – or you! – might collapse, immediately call your local roofing contractor. On the other hand, if you’ve passed this test and can multitask while balancing yourself in high places, then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start on your new roof installation.
Get Ready for a Roofing Installation
Facing a new roof installation can be intimidating, but we’re here to help you make this process easier. Before nailing down your shingles, you probably have at least one frequent question popping up inside your head – How to roof a house?
Let’s provide the answer to that question, shall we?
How to Roof a House?
Alexander Graham Bell once said, ‘Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.’ Before starting any project, make sure you have everything you need. Grab your phone or a pen and paper, and start by writing down materials you don’t own.
Roofing Materials You’ll Need
- Roof decking,
- Starter shingles,
- Shingles (asphalt or some other material),
- Ice and water shield (a protective membrane that wards off ice and water damage),
- Ridge cap.
While the above materials are mandatory, the following features are optional and can further avoid premature roof failure:
- Drip edge,
- Pipe boots.
Of course, you’ll need tools for securing these materials for better durability – tools such as roofing nails, roofing nailer, stapler, ladders, caulk gun, chalk line, gloves, utility knife, scaffolding, air compressor, air hose, circular saw, roof harness, straightedge, and tin snips.
The Six Quick Steps of a Roof Installation
Before you start, make sure you’re appropriately dressed – you don’t want to ruin any of your regular day-to-day clothes! Once you’ve changed into proper attire and have all your necessary materials and tools, let’s start installing!
1. Get Rid of the Old Roof
Tear off the old roof by removing old shingles and any other material that is not needed – flashing, underlayment, nails, etc.
2. Inspect Your Roof Decking and Replace It if Needed
If you find any damage on the roof decking, you should stop what you’re doing and replace it immediately. If your roof decking isn’t damaged, however, you can proceed with your project.
3. Cover Roof Decking With Underlayment
Underlayment adds extra protection against water damage and is usually made of felt paper and synthetic padding made from fiberglass or polyester.
4. Drip Edge Installation
The next phase you’ll need to tackle will be putting up a drip edge around the roof’s eaves and rakes. This type of flashing prevents water from seeping into the roof decking and from running under the shingles.
5. Install Starter Shingles and Flashing
Install starter shingles to ensure a solid base before installing asphalt shingles (or any other material you’ve chosen). Flashing is crucial in this phase as it prevents water from seeping around “weak” points (vents, chimneys, etc.).
6. Install Desired Shingles and Place a Ridge Cap
You can choose between many different shingle types, but always keep in mind to choose shingles that correspond to your climate. To finish your roof, put a ridge cap on top of your roof. The ridge cap serves to cover the ridge, i.e., this material goes on the highest point of your roof where the two tilted surfaces meet.
