Early Settlement

Originally, the area known as Fayetteville today was settled in 1736 by the Highland Scots. This area, along the Cape Fear River, was further divided into two main inland settlements named Cross Creek and Campbellton, which functioned as trading towns.

Later, in 1783, these two settlements, Cross Creek and Campbellton, were united into one city, which we know today as Fayetteville. The North Carolina General Assembly approved the official renaming.

The name "Fayetteville" was given to the city in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman who served as a Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

The Post-War Period

After the Revolutionary War, Fayetteville experienced increased growth and development, and the 1780s were seen as the “golden decade” of the city.

It is in Fayetteville that North Carolina ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1789, and in the same year, during a General Assembly meeting, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was also established. This university is the oldest state university in America.

The area of Fayetteville grew as a center of government and commerce due to its location. It also became the inland port and hub of the "Plank Roads" system, which was the key to overland travel between the 1840s and 1850s.

Fayetteville also suffered two major disasters during the 1800s. However, every time such a setback took place, Fayetteville's citizens managed to rebuild the city.

One of those disasters occurred in 1831 when a fire outbreak in the city destroyed over 600 buildings. After the Great Fire, reconstruction took place to rebuild many of the landmark structures we appreciate in this city today.

Fayetteville, NC was also in General Sherman's Troops path during the Civil War, which caused plenty of destruction. The North Carolina Arsenal, a manufacturing facility for weapons and ammunition for the Confederacy, was set to flames when the Sherman Troops arrived. Yet, the Fayetteville community managed to repair the city over time.
